Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount in Matthew chapter 5 can leave the Christian feeling defeated. He gives us a lot of challenging commands – “Unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven,” “I tell you anyone who is angry with his brother is subject to judgement,” “Anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart,” “Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.” However, listen carefully to your Savior’s sermon and you find grace and comfort and strength for your Christian life.
